From six to eight Hundred might probably 1/2 or 1/3 the numbers would!- 11. Amount which would probably be raised by the Freedmen, for school purposes, in each destitute neighborhood? Impossible to approximate a correct estimate - But a fraction of what would be needed 12. What efforts are you making to secure the support of schools by pupils, parents, boards of education, or the State government? Little now If the freed children are ever educated - The state must educate them - No Board of Education in this county could be organized, to act for a people who are taught to regard "the Southern whites as their enemies" - & who are inclined to act upon that belief - But a better state of feeling will soon exist between the races - [[?]] views of the mutual dependance of both the races are beginning to be felt & expressed 13. Whole number of additional School-houses, for Freedmen, now wanted in your Sub-District? The freedmen do not own a single school house or place of worship in this district 14. Could you organize your Sub-District into School Districts, each with a School Committee pledged to carry on schools therein? Do not think it could possibly be done 15. What is the public sentiment as to the education of the Freedmen and Poor Whites? - As favorable as could be wished 17. Are Night-Schools for Adults needed in your District? In what way could they be carried on? Needed doubtless but the "pursuit of knowledge under difficulties -" [[?]] but [[?]] of the freedmen - If the means of education were furnished gratuitously - I do not believe that one adult negro in two would acquire education to enable him to read understandingly - & I do believe of uneducated whites 18. What more can this Bureau do for educating the children of Refugees (or Poor Whites)? - Little! very little! at this time When the Excitement of the Presidential [[?]] is [[?]] - & a state of tranquility pervades the popular mind - more may be done than can be now 19. How long will Northern charitable aid be needed for Freedmen and Refugee Schools of your District? Until the proper provision is made by the state for the education of its poor I hereby certify, on honor, that I have given personal attention to the matters herein named, and that the answers given are, according to my best knowledge and belief, correct.
