General:

I have the honor to report that the "Freedmen's School House" situated upon the land of Mr Bartlett in this County, was fired and burned down on the night of Sunday May 20th 1866. The villanous work was no doubt performed by returned rebels, as Mr Douglas in charge of the school informs me that threats were frequently made by them and he heard about 4 O'Clock Monday Morning six rounds of ammunition discharged which he understands the incendiaries fired in honor of their victory. Instructions are respectfully requested as to what steps you desire taken in this affair.
