was then taken, some voted, one dollar, some two dollars, some five dollars, some one cent, some two cents.  Two dollars fine was however imposed by the Court with many curses, was paid.  The Court then proceeded to dispose of the prisoner, and after some consultation it was decided to hold over under five hundred dollars bail or imprison him in Warwick County jail until the next term of Court, as was well known bail to this amount could not be procured for him, imprisonment was to be his fate.  I would state at this junction, that the "white man" with whom the "Freedmen" had his altercation for which he was now about to be imprisoned was not even arrested, he made his statement to the Court, and of course he was perfectly justified in his action. During the trial a large number of "Freedmen" had assembled who felt very angry at the unjust and unceremonious manner in which their companion had been treated, and declared that they would not allow him to be carried away in the hands of the civil authorities; danger of an immediate collision appeared to be imminent.
