Office Supt. 1st. Dist. of Va.
Norfolk, Va. 21st June 1866.

Brvt. Brig. Genl. O. Brown
Richmond Va.

Genl.

I have the honor to inform you that Edwd. Long, whose case was reported on the 8th. inst, was tried yesterday on a second indictment for the murder of Mrs C. Whitehurst, on the 16th of April last. The same testimony was introduced by the Commonwealth [[strikethrough]] Attorney [[/strikethrough]] as in the trial for the murder of R.E. Whitehurst. No evidence was introduced on the part of the defense, the counsel considering it unnecessary. The jury after a short consultation returned a verdict of not guilty, and acquitted him. A. motion to set aside the former verdict, is before the Court, and will be discussed on Monday next. Messrs Chandler and Foster are Counsel for Long.

I am clearly of the opinion that the first verdict is not according to the evidence
