No evidence was produced or even hinted at in Court during the trial that Mr C. had been a refugee or a loyal man. During the same session of the court a similar case was tried where the verdict was the same viz. one cent and cost.

I cannot think as far as I have heard the evidence and have been able to find out (without consulting either Mr C or M. W.) that the fact of Mr C. being a loyal man and a refugee had any effect upon the jury. But they meeting as friends and the attack not being premeditated and that being the general verdict in this county for fighting they rendered the verdict they did on these grounds.
