Capt. T.F.P Crandon
A.Q.M & Supt 4 Dist Va

Capt,

I have the honor to make the following statement in the case of Peter Simpon, colored & Leonard Bowman of this place.

On the 23d of January 1866 Peter Simpson came before me with his counsel Mr. Gray and filed with me a complaint duly sworn before me stating that in July 1863 he entered into a contract with Leonard Bowman for the purchase of a house & lot for which he was to pay Bowman 1200 dollars, 1000 dollars in cash and the balance in 12 months which he paid through Mr. Gray to Mrs. Bowman all of these I forwarded to you some days since. The complaint further stated that, and this fact was substantiated by affidavits that said Bowman stated at the time of making the contract that he had paid all the purchase money to the party who sold the said house and lot to him and that he would make Peter Simpson a good & sufficient deed as soon as he paid him the sum of 1500 dollars. Bowman failed and neglected to make a deed to the said Simpson and could not because of the fact that he owed to one F.C. Ring from whom he purchased the house & lot upwards
