Col. O. Brown
Superintendt. Freedmen, [[?]], Va.

Sir:

I have the honor to inform you that I received your note last August, refusing "to appoint me as a Missionary, merely as such", in due time - and that about the same time, while my appointment was pending in expectation, all of a sudden, very unexpectedly, I recd. a not from the Hon. Sec. of War, stating that I was "honorably mustered out of the U.S.A. service, my service being no longer needed." - I came home, visited my friends, and am now anxious to return to the service. Can you find employment for me in your department, and do anything to secure me an appointment?

My friend Chap. Marshall U.S.A. has been reenstated. Any favor shown me in this matter will be very highly appreciated by your friend.

Very Respectfully
Your Obdt. Servant
