In the case of the Commonwealth against Aaron Smith a freedmen for Petit Larceny lately tried in the County Court of Powhatan before a Jury, there was no record made of the evidence, but as well as I recollect it was almost entirely circumstantial - a piece of leather being found in the prisoner's bag which corresponded with the skirts of the saddle cut off and which he failed by proof to account for satisfactorily - the prisoner was found guilty by the Jury and sentenced by the Court to two months imprisonment in the County Jail.
