Council Chamber Warrenton.
March 16th, 1866.

The common council of the town of Warrenton, being informed that some lawless persons (whose names are unknown) did, on last night disturb the peace of the town and violate its laws, by throwing stones into the room occupied by Miss Wood as a schoolroom and where she was at the time conducting her school for freedmen. Which conduct deserves, and has received the condemnation of all good citizens. Therefore be it ordained by the Mayor, Recorder and Alderman of the town of Warrenton.

1st. That the Mayor be, and he is hereby instructed to use all means in his power to ascertain and bring to punishment all parties engaged in said outrage.

2nd. That the Sergeant of said [[strikethrough]] this [[strikethrough]] said Corporation be and he is hereby directed to use special diligence in the prevention of similar occurrences in the future, and that he afford to Miss Wood by his personal presence (when necessary) or otherwise, as she may request such protection as she may need in conducting the operations of her said school without molestation or annoyance.

3rd. That the Mayor be and he is hereby further instructed to offer such reward as may in his judgment be adequate to assist in the detection of the parties who may have violated the laws or who may hereafter be engaged in any similar disturbances.  

4th. That copies of this ordinance be published in the papers of the town and delivered to Miss Wood and to Lt. MacNulty Ass't Sup't of Freedmen and for Fauquier County.
