(Lunenburg C.H, April 5th 1866.

Chester Stokes, a Freedman, sworn, deposes -

That at, or about, 9 A.M. April 5th 1866, he came upon the plantation of Wm. Y. Neal J.P. in & for Lunenburg Co, Va, as he had been ordered to do, in my presence, by Geo. C. Jackson J.P. to have a hearing of the case of Chester Stokes (col'd) vs Sylvanus Stokes (white) charged with shooting at the aforesaid Chester Stokes, with intent to kill.

That Mr Neal asked him where he was going?  Ans. That the gentlemen told him to meet them to settle the case that was on hand.  Mr Neal, then said, G-d d-n you, do you think my place is the public?  I wrote Mr Jackson last night that my case was not the public, that he didn't have cases settled, as if it was the the public, that his plantation was not a public place, and that his house was not a public house!

Chester states, that he then left the place, and started to come to the C.H, to see me, to tell me, what Mr Neal said, and ask what to do - That he got within a half mile of the C.H. when he met a man who told him that I had gone to Mr Neal's, when he turned around and started back, at "Uncle Joe's" blacksmith shop he was told that I had certainly gone there, as I had left
