I have the honor to make the following report, Phillip Brooks "cold" came to me today and states that a white man named Jacob Dixon had beat him and discharged a pistol at him, I went with Brooks before a magistrate and had a warrant issued for the arrest of Dixon the case was tried by two (2) magistrates Brooks proved by six (6) colored men that his mother lives with said Dixon and that on yesterday "Sunday" he Brooks went to see his mother, Dixon ordered him off his plantation and without any cause or provocation commenced stoning him Brooks and shot at him once, Brooks was cut in the head and otherwise injured from the effects of Dixons treatment. Dixon proved by two (2) white men that Brooks had threatened his life and on Sunday morning
