Sir. Your petitioner Jacob Shelton would respectfully represent to you, that sometime about the 9th of April 1865. Genl Stoneman's Federal Officer, with his command, passed through this section of Country, and your petitioner was the owner & had in his possession a very valuable Black Mare to wit. of the value of $150-, (one hundred & fifty dollars, in specie, which mare was taken from your petitioner, and a Black horse left in his possession without brand or mark and your petitioner was told by the Federal Soldier who impressed his said horse that no one would disturb or claim the horse left.- Your petitioner found the horse so completely broken down, that he was unfit for service for months, and left your petitioner almost without any means of cultivating his farms he however, nursed the horse left, by the Federal authorities and had the horse in possession over twelve month! Your petitioner resides in the state of North Carolina, and having business at Patrick CH Va rode the horse to that place and one Madison T Lawson, and Wilson T Lawson claimed the horse as property of their mother and demanded & took the said horse from your petitioner, thus depriving him of any means of cultivating his farm, your petitioner was necessarily compelled to expend a large quantity of food and attention in putting the horse in condition to render service on his farm, for his condition was such when left in his possession, that rendered him wholly unfit for service, as he was so completely broken down, that he was unable to
