Respectfully returned to Bvt Brig Gen O Brown, Actg Asst Adj Gen, with the information, that in compliance with instructions Mrs Austin was visited at her residence. Mrs Austin is living in a large brick house, containing 8 rooms, for which she pays a rental of $12.50 per Month. This house formerly belonged to her family, but owing to her second Marriage it was taken away from her. By an arrangement with her family she was allowed to retain possession, by paying 1/2 the Taxes &c which amount she pays as rent. Two of the rooms she sub-lets at $12.00 per month leaving her 50 cts per month to pay for the remainder, which with the exception of the two rooms she occupies, are empty.

She has living with her a colored boy 12 years old, and a colored girl about 18 years who act as servants. As far as her household furniture is concerned it is comfortable and sufficient for her wants. She earns a livelihood by the manufacture and sale of pickles, which she states amounts to very little. Nothing about the house would indicate suffering or distress. She says she has never applied to the city authorities for assistance as it would not be compatible with her feelings, as she belongs to one of the first families of Virginia — (She had a son who was an officer in the Confederate service)
