Office Asst. Supt. Bureau R. F. & A. L. Sub Dist. Louisa, Louisa Court House VA May 15/66 Bvt. Major T. F. P. Crandon, A.Q.M. Superintendent &c Gordonsville Va. Sir; I have the honor to report that on yesterday morning (court day) a crowd of men attempted to Lynch a Freedman, who, however succeeded in breaking from them and making his way with into my office. The crowd followed him for the purpose of taking him out. I put the man behind me and told them they could not do so, several times they yelled and rushed towards me, heaping upon me all sorts of offensive language. I ordered them out but they declared they wouldn't go without the "yellow son of a bitch." The crowd again pressed in and were cheered on by many outside, and the same scene reenacted. I appealed to all good and well disposed men to assisting me to restore order, but none appeared disposed that way, I strove to reason with them but was jeered at. I told them I would send for assistance - they cried out "they didn't care a damn" they were ready for them. I have also to say that through no
