This morning I have met several of the residents hereabouts who affect to deplore the riot of yesterday, but I have no faith in what they say_ During the Excitement, the whole business was infinitely relished by all, and I honestly believe that had it not been for my presence the mob would have killed the Negro and not one arm or voice [[strikethrough]] have [[/strikethrough]] been raised in his defence, among the citizens.

My position here is becoming Exceedingly unpleasant. I have endeavored always to conduct my self as an Officer and a gentleman, and I challenge comparison of my Record with that of any Officer in the Army. I have striven to treat every one whom I have come in contact with with courtesey - and it is mortifying after all this, to feel that I cannot walk through a crowd without meeting hostile looks and when I have passed by hearing insulting language. If I cannot have that protection and immunity from Outrage my Uniform claims for me I will very Respectfully ask to be allowed to take it off.

I will be a "peace offering" no longer.
