I have the honor respectfully to report as ordered to the accompanying statement of the boy Philip Woodson. A short time after I arrived in this Sub Dist a Mr Wm Gay came to me stating that Sally Woodson (col) had requested and urged Mr Gay and his wife to take this boy Jack and try to make something of him for if she kept him with her the evil propensities of the boy would cause her (Sally) to loose a home and she being the mother of three other small children and had been stopping at Mr Gays house with all of her children without doing anything for some time or until he Gay obtained this present place too and her relationship to his old servants. He Gay thought that it was his duty to help the woman and told her that he would try the boy. She (Sally) at the same time telling him to keep the boy as long as he could do anything with him for he was so bad that no one would have him around and to brush him when he needed it. This statement Mr Gay corroborated by satisfactory evidence and at the same time stating that the boy Jack had run away on account of breaking into and stealing from a Trunk of two colored girls some of their things, and they themselves (the girls) had threatened to whip the boy;— which all transpired in Mr Gays absence. After which Mr Gay saw the mother of Jack and she wished him to find the
