General:
I would most respectfully report, that Edward Long (col'd) charged with the Murder of Robt B. Whitehurst (white) has been [[strikethrough]] convicted [[/strikethrough]] tried in the Circuit Court, Judge R.H. Baker Sr. Presiding and sentenced to eighteen years in the State penitentiary.

Believing, with many loyal citizens; that he has been unjustly dealt with we have applied to Hon L.H. Chandler U.S. Dist Atty and B.B. Foster Esqr U S. Commissioner who have cheerfully consented to plead for the prisoners, and have had a hearing for a new trial to take place on the 12th inst.

I would also say, that the same court, are commencing for a second time, the trial of William Sailes and James L. Hill (col'd) for the murder of the aforesaid Whitehurst. Said Sailes and Hill, have been tried & acquited before the Corporation Court, of the offences charged,
