In compliance with instructions received from your office dated Richmond July 17/66, I have the honor to furnish the following report viz

That on the 2d inst, a col'd man by the name of Alfred Bently went into Harris's store at Powhatan C.H. and bought five cents worth of candy and jam as he thought a fifty-cent note, the store being full of persons, he did not just then get his change, but steped out & in a few minutes returned and asked for his change of another one of the firm, who said he did not owe him anything.  He told him how he had done, his change was again denied him. He then remarked "some one has robed me of my change."  When Douglas Harris attacked and beat him over the head driving him out of the store & I understand threatened to shoot him if he returned.  I heard also he threatened to shoot me if I would come over with out my saying anything or making any attempt to go.  Two gentlemen came into my office talked very rough to me and to the col'd man, who had come there to complain. They wanted to know what he had come to my office for.  I told them for advice.  They asked what advice I had given him.  I told them he would have to go to the
