Sir,

In compliance with instructions received from your office dated Richmond July 14/66.I have the honor to furnish the following report &c. Some time about the first of June last Hillary Harris had a cold man arrested named Grief Logan on suspicion of stealing meat out of his smoke house. He was taken before justice Dr. Harvy and committed and refused bail. Grief states that he was not in the house while Dr. Harvy was trying him. This he informed Mr. Davis and Lt Page. He was brought in for trial on the 2d inst and not the slightest evidence was brought against him. The commonwealth Atty asked to have him discharged. He was confined in jail near one month which time he had to loose, (Harris being his employer) and to pay ($100) one hundred dollars lawyer fees. I told him that was too much but he said he had agreed to give that, and would pay it. I wrote a note to Harris asking him to pay half of it as he had been wrongfully committed, of course he refused. I was told by the cold people that the commonwealth atty or agent went to Mr Harris and tried to hire some of the cold women to testify against Grief. That this could not be hurt if they did swear to a lie as it could not be proven on them.
