The case of Edward Long (col'd) who was tried for the murder of Whitehurst in the month of April last, and found guilty of murder in the second degree and sentenced to eighteen years in the — Richmond Penitentiary, — was brought up Judge Baker in Circuit Court on a motion for a new trial by his Council Major Foster, and U.S. Dist Attorney Chandler — Judge Baker reviewed the evidence for and against the Prisoner with strict impartiality, and finally concluded he could not grant a new trial as the Evidence was so conflicting — So Edward Long, was remanded back to jail -
