between two horsemen who were bringing him down Church Street. They had him one of each hand. The crowd were around them. Whitehursts head was bloody. They brought him down Church St, to Nicholson st. and told him to run. His house was in sight. They left him near it. I saw no rudeness or cruelty on the part of the horsemen. They were not armed. Dont know whether Whitehursts went home. Afterwards saw him at home dead. I dont know whether Long was present, I knew him, Did not know the men on the horses. W. ran toward home when they left him and told him to run. Could not tell whether they were protecting him or not.

On the 16th April saw Whitehurst. A tall black man on a grey horse was holding him by his hair, they reached me and a man on foot cried "Kill him" and struck me with a sabre. I did not know Long at the time. I now say he is the one who seemed to have W. by the hair. Before the examining court I said I did not recognize Long. I have seen him on the street frequently since. At the examination he sat near me in the full view. I remember
