I went home early the morning of April 16th not feeling well. Met the band. Asked what was to be done. Received different answers. Went home and lay down. About 12 my wife waked me, I lay about ten minutes longer, when I heard a tremendous noise and got up and looked out. My house is on Church St., about 150 yds. from Nicholson St. Saw two or three hundred Negroes shouting "Catch him", "Shoot him," Saw nothing that they were after, saw the crowd rush out from a cross street, there were two horsemen with a white man between them. Saw one of the horsemen who had a bad cloven foot, holding the white man by his shoulder or collar. He was a bright mulatto. Did not recognize the other. The white man seemed to be in charge of these two. They carried him around the corner of Nicholson St. and disappeared. Soon after I heard
