Colored Men on horses. He was walking between them and they were holding his hands or arms. They were going slowly. The crowd was shouting. I heard the horsemen say nothing. As they were turning into Nicholson St. I shut the window and went away. W. was bleeding from the head.

About 12 o'clock on the 16 April I went up driving an open coach in which were three colored girls, behind the procession in Cumberland St. Was between the speaker's stand and Nicholson St. when I heard a pistol fired by a man lying on the ground. The crowd rushed in that direction shouting "Rally, they are shooting our men". The people on foot on Nicholson St beat somebody who got away and ran up Church St. I drove up to see who they were after. In a few minutes they returned with a white man who was between two horsemen, and turned into Nicholson St. Unless for assistance he would have fallen at that time. Long rode a gray filly and had the man's collar in his right hand.  Long was a Marshal and wore his insignia. While he was between the two horsemen, some person on foot
