Evidence for Defense

Joseph Jones
I was at the stand of the 16" April. I heard a pistol go off. The people ran over there toward the firing. Saw a man run on and toward Church St, and afterward saw him between two men on horses. Long was at the stand collecting money when the pistol was fired. He tried to keep the crowd back. He hollered loud; "Stop, Stop, for God's sake Stop." Saw the two men with the white man afterward. Did not know them. The man the crowd was pursuing ran up to a horse. Five minutes after. I saw him between the horsemen. They had got him from the crowd who were beating him with railings. He was bloody. One horsemen was trying to keep the crowd back.

William H. Furmen
I have known Long for 10 years. I hired his wife and of course he was often on the lot. He appeared to be a quiet, respectful, orderly man.
