August 19th 1866

Dear sir yours of the 10 mth Just - to hand. I have just - gotten home & I don't - See any necessity for me to ride 30 miles upon an uncertainty.  The question is a plain one.  The child was freed and left - on my hands I have clothed & feed her well & Treated her kindly for 10 months. after having her bound to me her mother finds her lost child and writes to know when & how she can get - her child.  I say come & get her at once.  I am glad for her to be with her parents.  I have 9 of my own and don't - want - any more on my hands.  but charge her for the board of the child. a reasonable compensation.  What - any gentleman may allow after seeing the child and seeing that she has been well cared for Well you say the matter has been reported to you for action and the facts are before you just- write to me what you think & I will do it without riding so far. I am busy working in my farm and have no time to look over free negroes. I have fed & clothed the child.
