BUREAU R. F. AND A. L.
HD. QRS. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT,
BURKEVILLE, VA., Aug 2d 1866.

Major Gen. A. H. Terry
Comdg Genrl. of Va.

Gen.

I have the honor to respectfully request, that the Freedmen's Court. be re-opened in Lunenburg County, Va. And would state the following reasons for such a request.

1st. The cold blooded murder of a Freedman named Willis Craighead on the evening of the 5th of May 1866. The release of the accused party, (Ashwell) after it had been proven, that he threatened Craighead's life on the 5th May 1866, and on that evening Craighead was foully murdered. The intimidation to which the witnesses in this case had been subjected to, as exhibited in their confused testimony, before the examining Magistrate. The strong sympathy exhibited towards the prisoner during the trial.
