In Accordance with instructions from Head Qrs. Richmond Va, Aug 3rd inst ordering me to proceed to Suffolk, Va and report to Bvt Major Stone, to aid him in bringing to justice certain criminals in his Dist Va. &c.

I have the honor to report, that I went to Suffolk in compliance with the above order, but could not find Major Stone as he had left on or about the 8th inst of the present month, on a leave of absence to go North.

I found Sergt. John O Brien 1st Batt. 
12th US. Infty, in charge of Major Stone's 
Dist. - Could not get any information from the Sergt. in regards to the peace and quiet of the Dist. - So I returned to Norfolk and resumed my regular duties.
