You instructed me to write to you upon my return to this place in relation to the retention of my clerk "Walter Capehart".

My plea for his retention is based upon the ground that it would be folly on my part to remain here without a man associated with me upon whom I could depend in any emergency - and without such a person I would be in almost every respect at the mercy of men who would gladly sink me into the lowest depths of perdition, I deem it imperatively necessary that I should be accompanied upon all occasions of duty by a man able to give testimony
