and to be left alone as I should be were my clerk discharged would place me more than ever in the power of men who would consider it an honor to be able to blast my reputation no matter by what means -

I have laboured from my boyhood up to the present hour to maintain a good name, how far I have succeeded in doing this you can judge from what little you know of me -

and I could be induced by no earthly consideration to trust my name and reputation to the tender mercies of the citizens of my Sub District

I desire now as I have always done to discharge my whole duty and to obey implicitly all orders received from you - But Sir can it be expected of me that I shall travel alone through the mountains that surround me not knowing where to lay my head in safety
