Christiansburg Oct 16th 1866. Lieut. C. S. Schaeffer Asst. Supt. 8th District Va. Sir: I have considered the enclosed letter of Chester B Cofer bearing date, September 29th 1866, and addressed to Maj. Genl Schofield, and which was, by you refered to me, for reply. I am very grateful to you, for the courtesy done me, in the referance, as it enables me to do myself Justice before those, who would otherwise be prejudiced, unjustly against me. A portion of Mr. Cofers letter is true; the other is false. In the first place, I never send out an attachment against him, nor did I ever advise the suing out of an attachment against him. So much of Mr. Cofers letter as directly or indirectly; then intimates that I have or now am, proceeding against him, because of his loyalty to the government of the United States
