I trust I will not be placed at the mercy (?) of impenitent and unpardoned rebels who would rejoice to have me in their power and then again who will I find to go my bail men who have any sympathy with the Freedmens Bureau or an agent thereof are hard to find in this section of country

And again may not almost any one swear he has fears of personal violence from me, and if the magistrate require free hold security and I do not give it then send me to Jail -

Can it be possible that the Govmt will allow me an officer of the army who has been engaged in resisting armed rebellion for over five years, to be arrested and tried now by the very men who fought to destroy the Government that I fought to maintain

The Mayor of the town who issued the warrant for me was wounded in the same engagement in which I was shot (Chancelorsville May 2d 1863) I have submited to a great deal since I came here on duty - But that would be more than I could or would bear

And I trust the Major Gen'l Commanding and yourself will approve of my course in desireing to abide by the decision of the civil authorities of this place -
