The undersigned respectfully represents that a few days after the surrender of Gen. Ro E Lee he went near Red Oak Church in Appomattox County and picked up a black horse one part of the horses surrendered by Gen Lee. Said horse was in bad condition laboring under the distemper and at the time entirely unfit for any business whatever, that he nursed him and did every thing in his power to raise him, and so soon as the horse was able to travel or be of any service, (one month after) he went to the court house to get an order (from Mr Wm D Hix who had been appointed disburser of the surrendered property) to keep said horse and Mr Hix took him the only horse I had from me and gave it to
