But when Maj Stanhope was returning to his Hd Qurs. after the riot, some forty or fifty [[strikethrough]] or [[/strikethrough]] shots were fired at him, and he escaped, by his horse taking fright and running away. More trouble is looked for to day, or rather night. All sorts of rumors are afloat some of which are as follows, That the Freedmen's Bureau officers and Union officers are to be hung, and Northern men to be driven out. Troops are however in readiness and more are called for from Ft Monroe The officer in command of the Marine Corps has been requested to hold his marines in readiness for service, at a moments notice. This is but a running account, and as near the truth as it is possible to get. Should any thing transpire to night, I will inform you.
