Office Asst. Supt. Norfolk
Norfolk Va April 30 1866

Capt. A.S. Flagg A.Q.M.
Supt. R. F. and A.L.

Captain:
I have the honor to report that the examination of the negroes charged with the murder of Whitehurst on the 16th of this month, was concluded in the Corporation Court on Saturday. James Hill, William Sayles, John Wilson, Andrew Benson, James Pool and James Hardy were discharged by the Court, there not being sufficient evidence to hold them. Edward Long was remanded for trial, but as there was but slight evidence against him, he was admitted to bail in the sum of five hundred dollars, which bail was furnished.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Servt.
Charles E Johnston
Asst. Supt.
