Captain:
I have the honor to make the following report in regard to the murder committed at Pungoteague in this County on the 12th inst: A colored man named John Holden went to the house of Mr Drummond and finding him absent, remained until after dinner which was given him by Mrs Drummond. After dinner Mrs D. went to the barn to feed the horse and was followed by Holden, who with an axe struck her on the back part of the head. Leaving Mrs D. dead, as he supposed, he - Holden, then returned to the house and demanded money, of a colored servant, which he thought was in Mrs. D's possession, The colored girl refusing to give him the money, he also struck her with the axe in the same manner that he did Mrs. D. He then proceeded to the garden, where three other ladies were, and after following them a while with his axe, went away, telling a colored woman that he was coming back and kill them all. Search was immediately made for Holden by the citizens who were enraged at the act, and he was found near his house and taken to Pungoteague the
