Assistant Quartermaster's Office,
Norfolk Va. May 20th 1866

General,

I have the honor to state in reply to your com. of the 18th inst, in regard to my neglect in not reporting the burning of a school house on the E.S. of Va. that I could have stated nothing but the naked fact, that it was burned, and did not think that would be satisfactory.  I have had no official report of the fact itself, to this day, except as stated in the asst. Supts monthly report to you of the general condition of affairs in N'hampton Co. Capt. Pride informed me that he heard it accidentally several days after the fire, and that he was trying to learn who the incendiary was, but that he had been unable to fasten suspicion on anyone, up to the time of the conversation I had with him.  I also saw Miss Doxy, one of the teachers, and she could give me [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] no satisfactory proof that anyone known to her had actually burned the house, although she said certain parties had threatened to burn it and
