Sir

In reply to yours of the 11th inst I would say that on the 16th March I made application to Col Balloch for retained bounty of Alexander Payden Co B 2d U S Cold Cavalry who had filed his discharge with me - On the 22d Mch Col Balloch forwarded me $100 with vouchers to be signed, and I a day or two after handed Payden the money - I could not then have imagined the money did not belong to the man to whom I paid it.

I do not know where he is to be found but he has made an application for Bounty which will sometime be collected, when I shall stop the amount against him. I regret this mistake but can't blame myself in view of the rather remarkable identity of names.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt Svt

Transcription Notes:
"Bullock" is actually "Bulloch". Misspelled in original. ---------- Reopened for Editing 2023-08-09 07:51:41 It's actually Balloch, and spelled correctly here. Also, F.A. Seely
