Captain

I have the honor to report in the case of the State vs Edward Long (Cold) charged with the murder of R.B. Whithurst on the 16th of April ult.

I learn from Mr C.E. Johnston formerly Asst. Supt. of this County that Long was examined soon after the riot and held in the sum of $500 to appear before the Grand Jury for this County and answer any indictment that might be brought. In this finding of the Justice Court, four of the parties were in favor of releasing him for want of sufficient testimony, but feeling confident that the evidence was not sufficient to convict him before any jury they consented to bind him over

On the 6th inst the Grand Jury found a true bill against him for the murder of R.B. Whithurst upon which he was arraigned and tried yesterday
