One testified that he heard one of the horsemen say after Whithurst was shot and turned over to the two footmen "that was the way to serve the d-d sons of B-" - thought it was Long but was excited at the time and could not be positive

On the part of the defense it was shown that Long was engaged at the commencement of the Riot in collecting money to defray the expense   That he tried to the best of his ability to prevent the crowd from running after Whithurst - was heard to say "dont go there" and riding in rear of the crowd trying to prevail upon them to go back and a few minutes after while assisting Whithurst away, was heard to say "dont shoot him if you do I will shoot you" and in other ways trying to prevent them from beating and shooting him

This was testified to by colored witnesses upon the stand --- Longs character was proven by four White Gentlemen of known integrity to be excellent - He was never heard to utter an oath and have always born a good Christian character

The defense was well and ably argued 

The Jury after a short consultation returned a verdict of Guilty of Murder in the 2nd degree and sentenced to eighteen years imprisonment
