by no prejudice I am of the opinion that Long is innocent of the charge - That he was trying to the best of his ability to quiet the mob and save the man's life - That a strict compliance with the laws by an impartial and unprejudiced Jury would have acquitted him (Long) even had no evidence been offered by the defense.

Outwardly the trial seemed impartial and fair but the result shows a deep prejudice which rendered the jury incapable of giving the prisoner justice on account of his color -
