F.297. R.F.&.A.L. 3d Vol. 1866

Houchins has had the horse in possession nine months; his horse that he was in pursuit of at the time Sargeant Donelson got this US horse, he has never seen since, but lost him entirely_ His mother is poor, dependent, and an invalid; sick most of her time in bed - and he has besides a parcel of sisters unmarried, and helpless to take care of; his case is therefore one of a peculiar nature - and if you can, it will relieve him greatly, to give him authority to hold the horse; our country here is in such a state of excitement and prejudice that no tribunal we can have is save [[safe]] to rely on except the military

Most respectfully - your most obt. svt.
