Salem Roanoke Co Va Aug 30th 1866 Capt Gen. P. Sherwood Capt I am this day in receipt of your circular in reference the issue of rations. We are doing our best to support the paupers of this Co but find a difficult matter in consequence of the want of money in the County. I enclose a copy of application we have been forced to make to the people I am informed by Lieut Hunt Asst Supt Freedmens Bureau that he has on hand Some four hundred ll of hard bread and a quantity of fish & pork which he has but little demand for Can any arrangement be made to purchase it of the Government for the use of the paupers of the county?
