To the people of Roanoke County Virginia

The undersigned overseers of the poor for Roanoke, beg leave to represent to the people of the County, that in consequence of the peculiar circumstances of the Country, and the difficulty in starting in a new career for supporting the paupers on account of the impossibility of getting money to pay for supplies, we are utterly unable to supply the paupers with subsistence, unless the people will sell to us the necessary supplies on credit until 1867.

We therefore most respectfully beg that persons, will as a matter of charity furnish, even in small amounts, of corn, flour, bacon, potatoes &c for which we will issue them obligations to pay for the same, with interest from date. This move, is a matter of necessity, and if not responded to promptly, we fear the unfortunate paupers will suffer. The law presents no remedy, until another Levy can be made.
