Colonel

I have the honor to state that in company with Capt. G.W. Wells agent & Asst Supt I called today upon Lt. Col. J.R. Edie 8th Infantry Comd'g this Post, and requested information concerning the reported occupancy by his order of the property directed to be restored to Mr. Wm. Richards in this place and I was abruptly told by Lt. Col. Edie that he was using that house as a hospital, that it belonged to a rebel, and if I took any steps to restore it he had control of the house used by me - meaning the office of the Assist. Superintendent - and he would at once turn me out; to which I replied that I should certainly not be hindered from taking any necessary steps by any such proposed action of his; and I now report the substance of the conversation as above with the hope of learning whether or not it is a usage of the regular service for one officer to threaten another officer as a means of deterring him from the discharge of his duty.

The property referred to was leased to two (2) tenants, the lease to one (1) of whom did not expire until yesterday, Jany 31/ 66
