I beg leave to report that on wednesday the 21st inst I was assaulted in the public street of this place by two young men who are cadets at the Virginia Military Institute, Branch and Taggert are the names of the parties

You are doubtless aware that since the establishment of the asst supt office at this place the young men and boys of the town have amused themselves by shouting after the Officers on duty at this place, And also insulting the school teachers sent here by the American Missionary Society to educate the Freedmen

I was informed upon my arrival here that such was the case and that I would have to do as others have done 'ie' pass it by without noticeing. This I most positively refused to do As I feel that my duty as an officer demands of me that no insult be tolerated on my part while in the discharge of my duty, or an account of my position as an officer of the Government
