informed you) I caused the arrest of three boys, who had been shouting after me, using the following epithets — Oh! you blue belleyed Yankee — Go home — Freedmens Bureau — &c &c 

I also caused the arrest of two boys who had insulted the lady teachers of the Freedmens school —

His honor Major Edmondson reprimanded them and they were released upon promise of future good behavour, as the boys were small I let the matter drop

But I feel myself bound to resent the jeers and taunts of persons who are old enough to know how to behave themselves —

Did I pass them by I would consider myself unworthy of the name of an officer and a disgrace to the uniform I wear —

The facts of the case in the assault perpetrated upon me by Branch and Taggert upon me are as follows, I was proceeding to my office when a remark was made by the parties above named in regard to the Freedmens Bureau which I beleived was intended for my ears and as an insult or slur, I turned and walked back to them and asked which of them it was who made the remark They refused to tell me and ordered me to go on. This I refused to do, and still insisted upon knowing who had made the remark, They still refused to tell me —
