RF & AL Va 2d Vol. 1866 Stanardsville Va Green Co June 13th 1866 Howard Jamie E Nichols Mary M Teachers of Freedmen State that they do not consider themselves safe; that the people are very bitter towards them; that a petition is out to expel them from the town A plot is being formed to burn the school house. Colored men guard the school house every night. Ask for protection until the end of the session about four weeks longer nothing Bureau R.F. and A.L. Office Asst. Supt. for Madison & Greene Co. Va Madison C.H. Va June 21st 1866 The within papers are respectfully returned with the report that I have thoroughly investigated the matter and find, the fears of the ladies were unnecessarily excited by A.B. Sweeny late Lt. and Asst. Supt. for Greene Co. who was relieved from duty some time since but still remains without any apparant business and if it is within the province of military authority I would request that he be ordered to leave the county for the benefit of the Freedmen and all concerned (over) I do not consider any special protection to be necessary for these ladies as there is no danger of their being molested I am very respectfully Your obt.
