Officer there, given notice at or before the sale that the U.S. claimed this property, I should not have been a purchaser and I doubt if the sale would have taken place.

I presume Capt. Pride has acted in obedience to orders - but fear those orders have been predicated upon a wrong statement of facts, and if not countermanded, will do great injustice to me and Citizens of that County, who also purchased at that sale. The case has occurred before in that County and the U.S. Officers have not laid claim to the property sold under a judgement for debt.
Hence you will perceive the precedent has led me and others to feel we were safe and correct in buying at the sale of Smith S. Nottingham's land, and I trust, therefore the property may be at once restored to me.

I shall leave this City for "Eastville, Northampton County, Va." on Monday the 18[[th?]]", and will remain there two weeks to look after this and other business, and respectfully ask a reply to be sent to me at that address.

I am, General,
Very Respectfully,
Your obedient servant
Rich[[d?]] H. Rush.
