Bvt Major J.H. Remington

Major–
I have the honor to inform that several days ago while two colored girls and a colored man who is the Father of one of the girls were on their way to the upper end of the town for the purpose of attending church– one of these girls was rudely thrust from the pavement by a young man named Brokenburough. The girl immediately steped back on the sidewalk and Brokenburough again struck her and knocked her into the street. The colored man stood and looked on Brokenburough turned and asked him what he had to do with it. The colored man replied “nothing” when Brokenburough struck him a violent blow in the face with his fist– The colored man then caught hold of Brokenburough and held him, until he promised not to strike the colored man again– The case was tried by the Mayor of the town, who caused the colored man to pay one half the cost and Brokenburough to pay the other
