within hearing of each other, state allmost "Verbatim", "that it was a common affair for Mr F. Hall to whip said George Smith with a Cow-hide, knock him down, stamp on him with his boot while down, and strike him about the face and head with a large bunch of keys until he became insensible. That the cell in which said George Smith, disceased, was confined, was filthy with vermin, and though he Smith was in a nude state, and without bed or blanket, he was covered with vermin and his hands were thick with human excrement, and for months said F. Hall did not allow him to wash though he Smith has time and again asked to be allowed to do so.

That said F. Hall seemed very much incensed against "Yankee's", Union Southern whites, and negroes and would say "I wish all the dā€“d Yankee's and niggers were in hell, and if they dont leave they will be in jail for they have no business here anyway".

Said John Brooks uses blasphemous language and talks of Yankee's and negroes in the same manner as Mr F. Hall, and this is the
